Cross country (XC) is off-road racing over natural terrain:
Grass fields, trails, dirt paths, parks, and uneven ground
Courses usually looped (2 kmβ2 km circuits repeated)
Distances typically range:
Youth: 2β4 km
Juniors: 6 km
Seniors: 8β10 km (sometimes longer for men in higher categories)
Itβs less about speed on flat surfaces and more about:
Strength endurance
Hills, wind, mud, and terrain changes
Race tactics in tight packs
Athletics South Africa (Athletics South Africa) structures cross country through provincial leagues.
In Cape Town (Western Province):
Clubs (running clubs, school teams) compete in weekly league meets
Events are hosted at rotating venues
You earn points for:
Individual placing
Team scoring (top 4β6 runners per club)
Known as Western Province XC League
Usually runs through winter (MayβAugust)
Weekly or bi-weekly races
Age categories:
U9, U11, U13 (school level)
U15, U17, U19
Seniors, Masters
Team competition is a big deal:
Clubs accumulate points across the season
Strong club depth matters more than just 1 fast runner
Performing well in the provincial league leads to:
Selection for Western Province teams
Entry into ASA National Cross Country Championships
Potential national colours (Protea-level representation)

This document outlines the selection policy for Western Province Athletics (WPA) cross country representative teams for the 2026 season.
Selection will be considered across the following age groups:
Ages: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
Maximum: 2 athletes per category
Ages: 14, 15, 16, 17
U/23 β 4km
Senior Women β 4km
Senior Men β 4km
Masters (35β70 years)
Maximum: 4 athletes per category
Junior Women β 6km
Junior Men β 8km
Senior Men & Women β 10km
Maximum: 6 athletes per category
In highly competitive categories, the maximum number of athletes may be exceeded if space allows in the final team.
In some categories, fewer athletes may be selected if performance gaps between top finishers are significant.
Athletes must demonstrate the ability to complete races at a comparable average pace per km to leading athletes.
To qualify for selection, athletes must meet the following criteria:
Must be a South African citizen
Must be a licensed athlete (including ages 9β13)
Must participate in at least 4 League events (if aiming for selection consideration)
Must compete in the WPA Cross Country Championships in the relevant race distance (compulsory)
Selection is primarily based on performance at the:
WPA Cross Country Championships
League participation supports eligibility and consideration but is not the final selection determinant alone.
Medical certificates will not be accepted as a substitute for participation requirements.
Selections may be limited due to budget constraints
Final team selections are subject to approval by the WPA Board
